SHEPHERD FOOTBALL ADDS TEN

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Shepherd University head football coach Monte Cater recently announced that 10 more football players have signed letters-of-intent to play football for the Rams in 2005. Among the group are four players from Virginia and three each from Maryland and West Virginia.

Bryan Foley (Toms Brook, VA/Strasburg HS), a fullback/defensive end, was a three-sport athlete (football, wrestling, and track) at Strasburg. Foley was a two-year team captain and gained Second Team All-District and All-Area honors as a senior.

Rob Hostle (Walkersville, MD/Walkersville HS), an offensive lineman, played for former Ram Hal Grau at Walkersville. Hostle was an All-Area and All-Conference selection for the Lions.

Richard Hulver (Baker, WV/East Hardy HS), an offensive lineman /defensive end, was a two-year team captain at East Hardy. Hulver was a two-time First Team All-Potomac Valley Conference choice and also grabbed Special Honorable Mention All-State honors as a senior.

Kenny King (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach HS), a wide receiver, was a three-sport athlete (football, track, baseball) as Long Reach. King was a two-time All-Howard County choice at wide receiver.

Billy Merkich (Chester, WV/Oak Glen HS), a tight end/defensive end, was a two-sport standout (football, basketball) at Oak Glen. Merkich was a two-time Honorable Mention All-State selection in both football and basketball.

Patrick Nolen (Sterling, VA/Park View HS), a defensive lineman, was a two-sport athlete (football, basketball) at Park View. Nolen gained Second Team All-District honors as a junior.

Ryan Scanlan (Great Falls, VA/Langley HS), a fullback/linebacker, played for Shepherd Hall of Famer John Howerton at Langley. Scanlan earned All-District and All-Region honors at Langley.

Dustin Sperry (Kearneysville, WV/Jefferson HS), an offensive lineman/defensive lineman, lettered in both football and track at Jefferson. Sperry was an All-Area, All-CVAC, and Special Honorable Mention All-State selection for the Cougars. His brother, Adam, is a member of the Shepherd men's soccer team.

Matthew Ware (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point HS), an offensive lineman/defensive lineman, was a four-sport athlete (football lacrosse, indoor and outdoor track). Ware was an All-District in both football and track.

In addition, Zachary Grant (Monrovia, MD/Urbana HS), an offensive lineman, will join the Rams this year as a transfer from Lehigh University. Grant lettered in football, basketball, and track at Urbana. He was an Honorable Mention All-Area selection. He will have two years of eligiblilty remaining.
