SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Shepherd University head football coach Monte Cater recently announced that nine high school football players have signed letters-of-intent to play football for the Rams in 2005. Among the group are five players from Virginia and four from Maryland.
Chris Anderson (Clearbrook, VA/James Wood HS), a tight end, earned Most Valuable Offensive Lineman honors at James Wood.
Joshua Bedregal (Mt. Airy, MD/Linganore HS), a linebacker/defensive end, was an All-Conference selection at Linganore. He also earned All-Area and Honorable Mention All-State honors.
Bruce Dorsey (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS), a tight end/fullback, earned Frederick County Co-Player of the Year honors at Frederick. He also gained Second Team All-State honors. Dorsey rushed for 2,143 yards and 27 touchdowns on 250 carries as a senior.
Franklyn Herrera (Burke, VA/Robinson HS), a defensive tackle, was a two-time First Team All-District choice at Robinson. Herrera was a First Team All-State honoree as a senior.
Joe Lyons (Great Falls, VA/Langley HS), an offensive-defensive lineman, played for Shepherd Hall of Famer John Howerton at Langley. Lyons was an Honorable Mention All-Met selection by The Washington Post.
Mitch Maines (Centreville, VA/Westfield HS), a defensive lineman, was a member of the State Champion team at Westfield in 2003. Maines was a First Team All-Region choice.
Mike Russo (Monrovia, MD/Urbana HS), an offensive lineman, was a two-time First Team All-Conference choice at Urbana. Russo was a First Team All-Area and Second Team All-State choice as a senior.
Marcellus Taylor (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS), a defensive end, was a Second Team All-State choice at Frederick. He also gained First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Area honors.
Justin Toney (Stafford, VA/North Stafford HS), a defensive back/running back, was a member of the State Runnerup team at North Stafford. Toney gained Second Team All-District honors.
