SHEPHERD DOWNS GLENVILLE IN CONFERENCE OPENER

GLENVILLE, W.Va -- Shepherd University downed Glenville State College, 34-13, in WVIAC football action at Ike and Sue Morris Stadium on Saturday.

Shepherd opened the scoring at the 8:16 mark of the first quarter on a 10-yard run by sophomore running back Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/Calvert HS/ WV State).

The Rams increased their lead to 10-0 on a 37-yard field goal by junior kicker Ricky Schmitt (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem HS) with 6:09 left in the first quarter.

Wallace weaved his way for 14-yard touchdown scamper with 10:21 left in the second quarter to increase the Ram lead to 17-0.

Schmitt added his second field goal, a 23-yarder, with 3:29 left in the second quarter.

Glenville got on the scoreboard as time expired in the first half on a 45-yard field goal by Alex Amick to cut the Rams lead to 20-3 at the half.

Amick booted a 43-yard field goal with 4:12 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 20-6.

Shepherd answered back minutes later when junior quarterback Dan Chlebowski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim HS) teamed with redshirt freshman wide receiver Craig Tremel (Lilly, PA/Penn Cambria HS) on a 25-yard scoring play to increase the Ram lead to 27-6.

Glenville cut the lead to 27-13 when Joey Conrad scored on a four-yard run to cut the deficit to 27-13 with 9:12 left in the fourth quarter.

Shepherd recovered a Pioneer onside kick attempt and drove 54 yards on six plays -- capped by a nine-yard touchdown jaunt by Wallace with 7:19 left in the game to account for the final score.

Wallace rushed for a game-high 157 yards and three scores on 18 carries.

Chlebowski completed 15-of-24 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Conrad completed 29-of-59 passes for 267 yards for the Pioneers.

Tremel led the Ram receivers with five catches for 101 yards. Tavon McGee led the Pioneers with seven receptions for 106 yards.

The Ram secondary picked off Conrad four times. Senior cornerback Dustin Dudinski (Sterling, WV/Park View HS) recorded a pair of interceptions, while junior defensive back Dan Peters (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria HS) and sophomore defensive back Jerome Quinata (Woodbridge, VA/Hylton HS) each had one.

Quinata led the Rams with 11 tackles, including eight solo stops. Jacquez Taylor had a game-high 18 tackles (eight solos) to pace the Pioneers.

Shepherd improves to 4-0, 1-0 in WVIAC play, while Glenville State falls to 2-2, 1-1 in conference play. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
