SHEPHERD HOLDS OFF GLENVILLE, 20-14

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Senior running back Alex Herbert (Monrovia, MD/Urbana HS) rushed 28 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 20-14 win over Glenville State College in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium.

Shepherd took a 6-0 lead with 7:28 left in the first quarter when senior quarterback Leonard Ferguson (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar HS) teamed with sophomore wide receiver Rodney Jackson (Severn, MD/Meade HS) on a 15-yard scoring play. The Rams mishandled the snap and were unable to attempt an extra point.

Herbert scored on a one-yard run with 4:48 remaining in the second quarter. Ferguson's pass for a two-point conversion went incomplete.

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard with 48 seconds left in the half when junior quarterback Joey Conrad fired a four-yard scoring strike to freshman tight end Emery Williams to cut the Ram lead to 12-7 at the half.

Herbert scored on a two-yard plunge with 6:15 left in the third quarter. Ferguson the connected with senior wide receiver Jesse Correll (Port Republic, MD/Calvert HS) on the two-point play to extend the Ram lead to 20-7.

Conrad teamed with sophomore wide receiver Tavon McGee at the 12:44 mark of the fourth quarter to cap a seven-play, 55-yard drive. Chris Owens added the extra point to cut the lead to 20-14.

Glenville got the ball back with just over four and a half minutes left and appeared poised to win the game. The Pioneers converted two fourth downs and gained a first-and-goal at the Shepherd five yard line in the game's final minute. After downing the ball to stop the clock, Conrad was unable to connect on three straight passing plays, and Shepherd held on for the win.

Ferguson completed 11-of-24 passes for 174 yards, while Conrad connected on 43-of-69 passes for 439 yards.

Senior wide receiver Antonio Carter had 15 receptions for 179 yards and McGee had 12 catches for 155 yards to pace the Pioneer receivers. Senior wide receiver Chad Pence (Harrisonburg, VA/Turner Ashby HS) led the Rams with six catches for 77 yards, while Correll added four receptions for 59 yards.

Sophomore defensive back Bobby Jarvis (Richmond, VA/Hermitage HS) led the Rams with a game-high 14 tackles. Freshman linebacker Jacquez Taylor had 11 stops to lead Glenville.

Shepherd improves to 3-3 overall, 3-0 in conference play, while Glenville State falls to 2-5, 2-1. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to West Liberty for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
