SHEPHERD TAMES LIONS; CATER SETS WVIAC WIN MARK

ATHENS, W.Va. - Shepherd University handed Concord University a 48-21 setback in WVIAC football action at Callaghan Stadium on Saturday. Shepherd head coach Monte Cater surpassed former Fairmont State coach Deacon Duvall (125 wins) as the all-time winningest football coach in WVIAC history with his 126th victory at Shepherd.

Shepherd opened the scoring at the14:01 mark in the first quarter on a nine-yard scoring run by sophomore running back Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/Calvert HS/WV State) to take a 7-0 lead. Wallace took the opening kickoff back 71 yards to the Concord 25-yard line to set up the score.

The Rams took a 14-0 lead at the 8:47 mark of the first quarter when junior quarterback Dan Chlebowski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim HS) teamed with junior wide receiver Anthony Thomas (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry HS) on a 29-yard scoring pass. The score was set up by a 22-yard punt return by senior return specialist Dustin Dudinski (Sterling, VA/Park View HS) to the Concord 28-yard line.

Concord answered back when quarterback Ryan Pimentel connected with wide receiver LeBryan Patterson on a 77-yard scoring strike to cut the lead to 14-7.

Shepherd increased its lead to 21-7 when Wallace scored on a one-yard rush with 4:46 left in the first quarter. The score was set up when sophomore Joey Hooks (Germantown, MD/Northwest HS) blocked a Concord punt and Shepherd gained possession at the Mountain Lion one-yard line.

Junior kicker/punter Ricky Schmitt (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem HS) booted a pair of second quarter field goals of 22 and 32 yards to give the Rams a 27-7 lead at the half.

Wallace dashed 39 yards for a touchdown with 13:39 left in the third quarter to give Shepherd a 34-7 advantage.

Tank Tunstalle scored on a five-yard rush with 10:18 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 34-14.

Chlebowski, who completed 14-of-22 passes for 145 yards, connected with redshirt-freshman wide receiver Craig Tremel (Lilly, PA/Penn Cambria HS) on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 7:34 left in the third quarter to give the Rams a 41-14 lead.

Tunstalle, who rushed 13 times for 74 yards, scored on an 18-yard run for the Mountain Lions to cut the lead to 41-21 with 5:08 left in the third quarter.

Wallace, who rushed for a game-high 130 yards on 24 carries, scored his fourth touchdown of the day on a three-yard run with 8:54 left in the game for the game's final score.

Junior linebacker Todd Edmondson (Finksburg, MD/Westminster HS) led the Rams with 11 tackles, including seven solos. Darryl Wilson had a game-high 20 tackles to lead Concord.

Shepherd improves to 8-0, 5-0, in conference play, while Concord falls to 2-6, 2-4. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
