SHEPHERD FOOTBALL ANNOUNCES AWARD WINNERS, CAPTAINS

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University head football coach Monte Cater recently announced several team award winners at the annual team banquet. Five players were also announced as team captains for the 2006 season.

Redshirt-freshman wide receiver Craig Tremel (Lilly, PA/Penn Cambria HS) was named Rookie of the Year. Tremel recorded 31 receptions for 340 yards and hauled in a team-high five touchdown catches. He also rushed twice for 18 yards and a touchdown.

Junior kicker/punter Ricky Schmitt (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem HS) earned Special Teams Player of the Year honors. Schmitt connected on 10-of-14 field goals and 50-of-54 extra points to score 80 points. Schmitt's 80 points, 50 extra points, and 54 extra point attempts are all new Shepherd single season marks. He also punted 62 times for a 37.8 average with 25 downed inside the 20-yard line. Only 22 of his punts were returned.

Sophomore running back Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/Calvert HS) was named Team Most Valuable Player. Wallace rushed for 1,389 yards and set new Shepherd single season marks for most points (162), most touchdowns (27) and most rushing touchdowns (26). His 162 points set also set a new WVIAC single season record.

Senior offensive lineman Jimmy Violand (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills HS) was the initial winner of a new team award as the Lineman of the Year. Violand, who recently gained 2006 National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American accolades, helped the Ram offensive line set numerous records in 2005. He was also selected to play in the prestigious Cactus Bowl (NCAA II All-Star game).

Five seniors have been chosen as captains for the 2006 season. Offensive lineman Clayton Beard (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg HS), quarterback Dan Chlebowski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim HS), inside linebacker Todd Edmondson (Finksburg, MD/Westminster HS), defensive back Bobby Jarvis (Richmond, VA/Hermitage HS), and safety Dan Peters (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria HS) were named team captains.
