SHEPHERD FOOTBALL ANNOUNCES AWARD WINNERS, CAPTAINS

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Shepherd University head football coach Monte Cater recently announced several team award winners at the annual team banquet. Two seniors and two redshirt-juniors were also announced as team captains for the 2005 season.

Senior running back Alex Herbert (Monrovia, MD/ Urbana HS) was named Team MVP. Herbert led the Rams and was third in the WVIAC in rushing with 1,052 yards in 10 games for a 102.5 per game average in 2004. He led the league in scoring with 17 touchdowns (16 rushing) for 102 points. Herbert rushed for over 100 yards in eight games. Herbert completed his career as the school's third all-time leading rusher with 3,447 yards. His 43 career rushing touchdowns rank him second on the SU all-time list.

Junior return specialist Dustin Dudinski (Woodbridge, VA/Park View HS) and sophomore kicker/punter Ricky Schmitt (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem HS) shared Special Teams Player of the Year honors.

Dudinski led the Rams in punt returns with a 11.3 average and a touchdown in 32 returns. He also topped the team in kickoff returns with 12 for a 20.8 average return.

Schmitt led the WVIAC in punting with a 38.3 average. He had 20 of his punts downed inside the 20-yard line. Schmitt also only had 15 of his punts returned as he led the conference in net punting with a 36.5 average. He also connected on 9-of-11 field goals and 33-of-36 extra points for 60 points as a kicker.

Freshman offensive lineman Bubba Brady (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert HS) was named Rookie of the Year. A converted defensive lineman, Brady quickly worked his way into a starting role on the offensive line.

Dudinski joins senior offensive lineman James Violand (Columbia, MD/Oakland HS), redshirt-junior inside linebacker Todd Edmondson (Finksburg, MD/Westminster HS), and redshirt-junior outside linebacker Bobby Jarvis (Richmond, VA/Hermitage HS) as team captains for the 2005 season.
