(SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV) -- Alex Herbert (Monrovia, MD/Urbana) rushed for a career-high 227 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries to lead Shepherd College to a 60-14 win over Concord in the 38th annual Civitan Bowl at Ram Stadium.
Herbert received the Civitan Bowl Most Outstanding Back award for his stellar play. Michael Walker (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) added a 20-carry, 194-yard rushing effort with two touchdowns, while quarterback Joel Gordon (Waynesboro, VA/Waynesboro) added 83 yards and a pair of touchdown runs on seven carries.
Gordon completed 9-of-22 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
Sophomore wide receiver Jamal Gardner (Staunton, VA/Robert E. Lee) led the Ram receivers with five receptions for 68 yards. Ron Dawkins (Arlington, VA/Washington & Lee) added two catches for 31 yards.The Rams broke a pair of single game team records in the win -- most rushing yards with 542 (old mark 507, vs, Bluefield State, 1978) and most yards of total offense with 673 (old mark, 660 vs. Fairmont, 1999).
The Shepherd defense was led by sophomore outside linebacker Dan Winning (Culpeper, VA/Culpeper) with a game-high 12 tackles, two tackles-for-loss and a pass breakup. Winning earned Civitan Bowl Most Outstanding Lineman honors. Senior Luke Benchoff (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport) added 11 stops, while junior defensive back Matt Meadows (Romney, WV/Hampshire) led the Ram secondary with two interceptions.
Terris Baldwin rushed 17 times for 129 yards and a score to lead Concord. Kory Wright added eight receptions for 111 yards and touchdown.
Shepherd completes the season with a 7-3 overall mark, including a 5-2 record in conference play. Concord finishes the year at 3-8, 2-5.
