PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Shepherd College rallied past West Virginia Wesleyan with a 9-4 triumph in second day action of the WVIAC Baseball Tournament at Hunnicutt Field on Saturday.
Joe Cook (Loudoun County/Leesburg, VA) led off the game with homer to right to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Joe Honce tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame with a solo blast to left centerfield.
Shepherd retook the lead in the second inning when Josh Delawder (Paw Paw (Potomac State)/Paw Paw, WV) singled and later scored on a RBI-single off the bat of Shane Wines (Warren County/Front Royal, VA).
The Bobcats took a 4-2 advantage with three runs in the seventh behind RBI-singles from Kip Cottrill, Honce, and Eric Schmook.
Shepherd answered back with with three runs in the eighth to take a 5-4 lead. Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) was hit-by-pitch and later scored on a single from Tavis Laws (Sherando (Eastern Mennonite)/Stephens City, VA). Delawder singled and later scored on a Wines sacrifice fly. Laws gave the Rams the lead when he scored from third on a wild pitch.
Shepherd added four insurance runs in the ninth. Cook led off with a double and scored on Spry's RBI-single to left. Spry later scored on a sacrifice fly from Delawder. Laws launched a two-run homer to left to give the Rams a 9-4 win.
Ram reliever Austin Bowie (Loudoun Valley/Paeonian Springs, VA) held the Bobcats scoreless over the final 2 1/3 innings to gain the win. Wesleyan starter Ryan Shetterly suffered the loss.
Shepherd improves to 25-17, while West Virginia Wesleyan completes its season with a 24-23 mark. The Rams advance to face Concord.
