KUTZTOWN, Pa. --Jake Ellifritz (Keyser (Potomac State/Coastal Carolina)/Keyser, WV) blasted a solo homer in the 10th inning to help lead Shepherd College to an an 8-6 victory over West Virginia State in second day action of the 2002 North Atlantic Regional Tournament at North Campus Field in Kutztown.
Trailing 5-1 in the top of the sixth inning, the Rams scored a pair of runs to cut into the Yellow Jacket lead. Zac Couturiaux (Linganore (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) ripped a two-run single to right field to plate Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) and Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD).
Shepherd took a 6-5 lead with three runs in the seventh. Drummond drove a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA), and Ellifritz added a two-run single to score Spry and Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD).
State's David Smith smacked a two-out home run to left in the eighth to force extra innings.
Ellifritz led off the 10th inning with a homer to left to give the Rams a 7-6 lead. Lucas Taylor (Keyser (Potomac State/Davis & Elkins)/Keyser, WV) added another run when he scored on a Powell single after reaching base on a bunt single and moving to third on a single from Walck.
Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) set the Jackets down in order to improve to 9-5 on the year. Renner had six strikeouts and did not allow a walk in his complete game victory.
Walck led the Rams with three hits, while Taylor, Spry, Ellifritz, and Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA) each contributed a pair of hits.
Smith went 4-for-4 with a pair of homers and three runs scored to lead West Virginia State.
Shepherd improves to 35-11-1, while State completes its season with a 28-20 mark.
