SHEPHERD ELIMINATED BY STATE

PRINCETON, WV -- West Virginia State pounded out 18 hits en route to a 21-5 win over Shepherd College to win the WVIAC Baseball Tournament at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton on Sunday.

Trailing 7-0, Shepherd rallied with four runs in the fourth. Jake Ellifritz (Keyser (Potomac State/Coastal Carolina)/Keyser, WV) and Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA) each had RBI-singles to highlight the rally.

State put the game away with nine runs over the next three innings.

Shepherd's final run came on a solo homer in the sixth from Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA).

Jean-Gilles Larocque went 2-for-3 with six RBI to pace the State attack.

Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Tim Shilling went 8 1/3 innings to improve his record to 4-2. Shepherd starter J.R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville/Hedgesville, WV) fell to 6-3 with loss.

Shepherd falls to 34-10-1, while West Virginia State improves to 28-18.
