INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Top-seeded West Virginia State handed Shepherd University an 18-5 setback to eliminate the Rams from the NCAA II North Atlantic Regional Tournament at Cal Bailey Field on Friday afternoon. Shepherd ends its season at 34-18.
The Yellow Jackets used a 24-hit attack with six home runs en route to the win. Kyle Jones and Jeffrey Miller each belted a pair of homers, while Ryan Taylor and Eric Workman also added round-trippers.
Boo Hager went 5-for-6 and Taylor went 3-for-6 with five runs batted in to pace the Jackets.
Sophomore Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) went 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs to lead the Rams. Senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) added a 1-for-3 effort with a pair of runs scored.
Freshman Brandon Armentrout (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) took the loss for the Rams. West Virginia State starter Travis McGrath went seven innings and scattered six hits to gain the win.
