SHEPHERD SPLITS WITH STATE

J.R. Fitzwater improved to 6-2 with a win over State in game two.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV -- Shepherd College split with West Virginia State in WVIAC baseball action on Saturday at Fairfax Field. State took a 6-4 victory in game one, while Shepherd smacked 15 hits en route to a 14-3 triumph in the nightcap.

Jerry Adkins went 2-for-3 with a home run to lead State in game one. Andy Maught added a three-run homer in the third inning.

Josh Delawder (Paw Paw (Potomac State)/Paw Paw, WV) went 3-for-3 and Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) went 2-for-3 for the Rams. Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) belted his 10th home run of the year in the third with a three-run blast.

Yellow Jacket reliever Blair Goheen allowed only one hit over final four innings to gain the win. He also added seven strikeouts. Ram starter Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) suffered the loss.

Drummond went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored, and a pair of RBI to lead the Shepherd attack in game two. Delawder added a 3-for-4 outing with a double, two RBI, and a pair of runs, while Tavis Laws (Sherando (Eastern Mennonite)/Stephens City, VA) was 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Jon Serrano (Brooke Point/Stafford, VA) smashed a three-run homer to left to highlight a five-run fourth inning for the Rams.

Adkins led the Yellow Jackets with a 1-for-2 effort with a run scored and an RBI.

J.R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/Hedgesville, WV) worked the first five innings scattering four hits and fanning five to improve to 6-2 on the year. Austin Bowie (Loudoun Valley/Paeonian Springs, VA) pitched scoreless ball over the final two innings. State starter Dana Samples suffered the loss.

Shepherd moves to 15-15, 9-5 in WVIAC action, while West Virginia State is now 17-16-1, 11-5. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Alderson-Broaddus in the regular season home finale. Doubleheader action will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Fairfax Field.
