SHEPHERD BASEBALL RUNS WIN STREAK TO 11 GAMES WITH SWEEP OF WEST LIBERTY
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University swept West Liberty in WVIAC baseball doubleheader action on Sunday at Fairfax Field. The Rams took a 5-3 win in game one and rallied for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap to extend their winning streak to 11 games.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in game one in the first inning when sophomore first baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) belted a two-run homer and junior outfielder John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State) doubled and later scored on an error.
The Rams added two more runs in the second when Webb stroked a two-run double to plate freshman third baseman Andrew McCormick (Winchester, VA/Sherando HS) and senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State).
The Hilltoppers scored single runs in the last three innings and had two on and two out when Webb got Joshua Yager to fly out to center field to secure the win.
Webb led the Rams with a 2-for-3 effort with four RBIs.
Josh Tysk went 3-for-3 for West Liberty. Yager, Mike Darrah, and Cory Finley each added a pair of hits.
Senior pitcher Chris Anderson (Middletown, MD/ Middletown HS/Hagerstown CC) went 4 2/3 innings scattering seven hits and fanning three en route to his sixth win of the year. Sophomore reliever Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) went 1 1/3 innings before Webb came in to earn his fourth save of the year. Hilltopper starter Justin Edwards took the loss.
Hawse belted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Andrew McCormick in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Rams to a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
West Liberty took a 2-0 lead in the fifth on RBI-singles from Pat Hudkins and Tony San Felippo.
Shepherd tied the game in the bottom of the fifth at 2-2 on two-run double by Hawse.
Andrew McCormick and junior catcher Matt Noll (Charles Town, WV/Jefferson HS) each had two hits to pace the Rams.
Josh Bowers (2-0) picked up the win for the Rams, while Mike Darrah took the loss for West Liberty.
Shepherd improves to 18-5, 6-0 in conference action, while West Liberty falls to 5-14, 1-7. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Concord on Tuesday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
Dirk Webb gained the save in game one.
Josh Bowers picked up the win in game two.
Ryan Brady and Nicky Brown combine to make the force play at second.
