SHEPHERD BASEBALL SWEEPS WEST LIBERTY

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University swept West Liberty in WVIAC baseball doubleheader action on Saturday at Fairfax Field. Junior outfielder John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State) smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one to lift the Rams to a 7-6 win. Freshman third baseman Andrew McCormick (Winchester, VA/Sherando HS) smacked a bases-loaded single to plate senior second baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/Potomac State) with the game-winner in a 3-2 Shepherd triumph in the nightcap.

Senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS), sophomore first baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS), and redshirt freshman designated hitter Matt Bartgis (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) led the Rams in game one with two hits apiece.

Sean Lucas went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Hilltoppers.

Former Ram basketball standout Brady Catlett (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/New Hampshire) picked up his first career win in relief of starter Scott McCormick (Stephens City, VA/ Sherando HS/Potomac State). C. J. Besece suffered the loss for the Hilltoppers.

West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the first in game two on a solo blast from Justin Edwards.

Shepherd tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth when Webb singled and later scored on a Nicky Brown ground out.

The Hilltoppers retook the lead in the sixth when Edwards singled and later scored on an RBI-single from Mike Darrah.

The Rams tied the game at 2-all on a solo blast by Webb in the bottom of the sixth to set the stage for comeback win.

Sophomore Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) picked up his first win of the year. West Liberty reliever Cory Finley took the loss.

Shepherd improves to 16-5, 4-0 in WVIAC action, while West Liberty falls to 5-12, 1-5. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a noon doubleheader. The action was originally slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
