Charlie Drummond's three-run homer lifted Shepherd to a 7-6 win in game one.

SHEPHERD SPLITS WITH WEST LIBERTY

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV --Shepherd split with West Liberty in WVIAC baseball action on Friday afternoon at Fairfax Field. Shepherd held off the Hilltoppers for a 7-6 win in game one, while West Liberty gained the split with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.

Charlie Drummond (Strasburg, VA/Strasburg HS) belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning in game one to key a four-run rally by the Rams to help the Rams gain a 7-1 advantage.

West Liberty plated five runs in the fifth to get to within one run at 7-6. Keith Pealer and Eric Bailey each belted two-run homers to highlight the inning.

Drummond retrird the Hilltoppers in order in the seventh to gain his fourth save of the year.

Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) and Norris Roy (Gambrills, MD/Arundel HS/Hagerstown CC) each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams. Roy also drove in a pair of runs.

Reliever Todd Coder (Woodbridge,VA/ Woodbridge HS) picked up the win for the Rams, while West Liberty starter Brandon Moore took the loss.

West Liberty gained a 1-0 lead in the nightcap in the first when Justin Edwards reached base on an error, moved to third on a Dave Gorby double, and scored on a wild pitch. The Hilltoppers increased their lead to 2-0 in the third when Bill Rinderer doubled and later scored on a double by Edwards.

West Liberty added a run in the fourth when Eric Bailey reached base on a fielder's choice and later scored on a double by James Gaskins to make it 3-0.

Shepherd threatened in the sixth but only scored one run. Shane Wines (Front Royal, VA/Warren County HS) lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Cook, who led off with a single. The Rams had the bases loaded with two outs when reliever Josh Tysk got Jason Walck (Waynesboro, PA/ Waynesboro HS) to ground out into a force play.

Drummond went 3-for-4 to pace the Rams at the plate, while Rinderer went 3-for-4 to lead the Hilltoppers.

Ram starter Tony Magnanelli (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) took the loss, while Matt Brown picked up the win for West Liberty.

Shepherd moves to 13-14 overall, 3-5 in WVIAC play, while West Liberty is now 11-20, 4-3. The two teams return to action on Saturday at Fairfax Field for a single game at 1:00 p.m.
