SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Shepherd College and West Liberty split in doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Rams earned a 10-9 win in the first game, while the Hilltoppers took a 6-4 triumph in the nightcap.
Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) drove in five runs with a pair of homers in the first game. Lucas Taylor (Keyser (Potomac State/Davis & Elkins)/Keyser, WV) and Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) added three hits each.
Shepherd starter Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA) improved to 5-1, while reliever Jimmy Jackson (Old Mill/Millersville, MD) set a new Shepherd single season saves mark with his eighth of the year. He breaks the old mark of seven that he shared with Jason Walter.
Cory Del Guzzo went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Hilltoppers to a 6-4 win in the nightcap.
Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) and Spry each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
West Liberty's Justin Ferrell improved to 2-1 with a complete game win. Ram starter Brian Renner dropped to 4-3 with the loss.
Shepherd moves to 18-5-1, 7-1 in WVIAC play, while West Liberty goes to 11-14, 6-6. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to face Concord for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
