SHEPHERD BASEBALL SWEEPS WINGATE

WINGATE, N.C. -- Shepherd University swept Wingate University in baseball doubleheader action on Wednesday night at Christopher Stadium. Shepherd earned a 9-2 win in game one and added a 7-0 victory in the nightcap.

Senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while senior shortstop Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC) was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to pace the Rams in game one. Sophomore first baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) also added a pair of hits, and senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) added a 1-for-4 effort with two RBIs and a run scored.

Josh Benton went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and a pair of RBIs to lead the Bulldog attack. Jay Barnes also added a pair of hits.

Ram starter Scott McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS/Potomac State) picked up the win with relief help from sophomore Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS). McCormick went five innings and yielded only one earned run as he improved his record to 5-1 on the year. Bulldog starter Jeremy Helms (0-1) took the loss.

The Rams took a 2-0 led in the nightcap in the first inning when Cook walked and later scored on an RBI-single from junior outfielder John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State). Hawse later scored on a double off the bat of senior second baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/ Potomac State).

The Rams added five runs in the seventh to secure the win. A two-run double from Hawse and a two-run single from Nicky Brown keyed the inning.

Senior pitcher Chris Anderson (Middletown, MD/Middletown HS/Hagerstown CC) fanned four and walked only one in six innings. Anderson scattered three hits to improve to 5-0. Webb set the Bulldogs down in order in the seventh. Michael Bell suffered the loss for Wingate.

Shepherd improves to 14-5, while Wingate falls to 9-21. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host West Liberty for a 1:00 p.m. conference doubleheader.
