SHEPHERD SPLITS WITH WINGATE

WINGATE, N.C. -- Senior pitcher Scott Koscielniak (Severn, MD/Old Mill HS/CCBC-Catonsville) scattered two hits over seven innings to lead Shepherd University to a 7-1 win over Wingate University in baseball action at Wingate on Tuesday. Wingate gained the split with a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.

Sophomore catcher Matt Noll (Charles Town, WV/Jefferson HS) led the Rams with a 4-for-5 performance. Junior shortstop Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC) and junior second baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/ Potomac State) each smacked a pair of hits. Brady also drove in two runs.

Junior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State), junior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS), and sophomore first baseman Steve Kozak (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson HS) each drove in a run.

Koscielniak got relief help from freshman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS), who limited the Bulldogs to only two hits over the final two frames. Wingate starter Michael Bell took the loss.

Wingate pitcher Josh Benton helped his own cause in the nightcap with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Shaughn Neal added a 2-for-4 outing for the Bulldogs.

Shepherd's only run came in the second when Ryan Brady walked and later scored on an RBI-single off the bat of freshman first baseman Phillip Powell (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown HS).

Junior outfielder Ryan Harju (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley HS/Hagerstown CC) went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams. Joe Cook's triple was Shepherd's only extra base hit.

Benton went six innings for Wingate to pick up the win. Matt Trent worked the final inning. Junior Tony Magnanelli (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) took the loss for the Rams.

Shepherd moves to 4-6, while Wingate goes to 11-19. The two teams return to action on Wednesday with single game action beginning at 2:30 p.m.
