WINGATE RALLIES PAST RAMS FOR 8-7 WIN

WINGATE, N.C. -- Wingate University rallied for an 8-7 win over Shepherd University in baseball action at Wingate on Monday. The Rams were initially scheduled to face Concord today, but the contest was cancelled due to field conditions.

Wingate scored five runs in the eighth inning to get to within a run at 7-6, and plated two more in the ninth to squeeze out the win.

Junior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while junior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to pace the Rams. Freshman second baseman Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Keith Benton went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Wingate. Josh Benton, Kirk Matthews, and Dan Brooks each added a pair of hits.

Ram starter Scott McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS/Potomac State) had another fine outing. McCormick scattered six hits over six innings, allowing only one earned run while fanning six. Sophomore reliever Todd Coder (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge HS) (0-1) took the loss. Wingate reliever Stuart Richardson (1-0) picked up the win.

Shepherd falls to 3-5, while Wingate improves to 10-18. The two teams return to action on Tuesday with doubleheader action beginning at noon.
