SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va -- Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) blasted a two-out, two-strike, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Shepherd to an 8-7 win over the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown in game one of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Fairfax Field. The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie in the nightcap. The game was halted after nine innings due to darkness.
The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 in game one behind a Lance Williams (W. T. Woodson/Oak Hill, VA) RBI-single in the second and a Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) solo homer in the third.
The Mountain Cats tied the game at 2-2 on a Anthony Yarkowski two-run blast in the fourth.
Pitt-Johnstown erupted for five runs in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead. Nick Pfennigwerth's three-run double highlighted the inning.
Shepherd cut the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA) singled to score Jake Ellifritz's (Keyser (Potomac State/Coastal Carolina)/Keyser, WV) and Drummond singled and later scored on an error to set up his seventh inning heroics.
Drummond had a 2-for-2 performance at the plate with three RBIs and two runs. Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) also added two hits.
Jimmy Jackson (Old Mill/Millersville, MD) worked the final one and two-thirds innings to gain his first victory of the year. Mountain Lion reliever J. J. Thomas took the loss.
The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap in the second inning when Phil Patano hit a solo homer and Brandon Ickes singled and later scored on a single off the bat of Rick Baxter.
The Rams tied the game at 2-2 with single runs in the third and fourth. Williams doubled and scored on an error in the third, while Spry doubled and scored on an RBI ground out by Jason Rhea (Berkeley Springs (WV) (Pensacola JC)/Abington, VA) in the fourth.
Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA), Spry, and Drummond led the Rams in game two with two hits each.
Shepherd moves to 4-0-1, while Pittsburgh-Johnstown is now 9-4-1. The Rams will travel to Mount Olive on Monday for a single game at 2:30 p.m.
