SHEPHERD SWEEPS SAGINAW VALLEY

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV --Charlie Drummond (Strasburg, VA/Strasburg HS) blasted a walk-off home run to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning of game one to lift Shepherd College to a 5-4 win over Saginaw Valley in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Thursday. The Rams earned the sweep with a 9-3 triumph in the nightcap.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the third when Justin Hanning singled and later scored on an RBI-single from Jason Burghart.

Shepherd tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth when Jon Serrano (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point HS) doubled and later scored on an RBI-single Jason Walck (Waynesboro, PA/ Waynesboro HS).

The Rams took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Tavis Laws (Stephens City, VA/Sherando/Eastern Mennonite) doubled and later scored when Josh Delawder (Paw Paw, WV/Paw Paw HS/Potomac State) grounded into a double play. The Rams extended their lead to 3-1 in the sixth when Bryan Lowry (Mt. Airy, MD/Indiana University) led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Laws.

Saginaw Valley took a 4-2 lead in the seventh with three runs on three hits, including an RBI-double from Mike Crawford and and RBI-single from Hanning.

Shepherd tied the game in the seventh when Delawder led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Cardinal error to set the stage for Drummond's heroics.

Shepherd reliever Jeff Kirkpatrick (Waynesboro, PA/ Waynesboro HS) picked up the win, while Cardinal reliever Jeff Schulz took the loss.

The Rams recorded 12 hits in the nightcap, including home runs by Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) and Drummond, en route to an easy win to gain the sweep.

Joe Funsch and Kurt Neveau hit round-trippers for the Cardinals.

Scott Koscielniak (Severn, MD/Old Mill HS/CCBC-Catosnville) recorded five strikeouts in four innings to gain the win, while Cardinal starter Jesse Thompson suffered the loss.

Shepherd improves to 4-5 on the year, while Saginaw Valley falls to 6-6. The Rams will return to action on Saturday when they host Bluefield College (VA) for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
