RAMS SWEEP SOUTHERN VIRGINIA; SPRY SETS HOME RUN, RBI MARKS

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Shepherd College swept a doubleheader from Southern Virginia in baseball action on Friday at Patchin Field. The Rams took an 8-4 win in game one and added an impressive 14-3 victory in the nightcap.

Shane Wines (Warren County/ Front Royal, VA) went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams in game one. Joe Cook (Loudoun County/Leesburg, VA), Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/ Strasburg, VA), and Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) added two hits each. Drummond belted a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Spry doubled home Jason Walck (Waynesboro/ Waynesboro, PA) in the first to set a new Shepherd record for career RBI with 130, breaking the old mark of 129 set by Bill Staub (1996-99).

Michael Bowen smacked a two-run homer to lead the Knights.

Shepherd starter Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) went the distance scattering six hits and fanning five to improve to 4-0. Southern Virginia starter Chris Evans took the loss.

The Rams pounded out 17 hits in game two en route to an easy 14-3 triumph.

Josh Delawder (Paw Paw (Potomac State)/Paw Paw, WV) was 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Spry was 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Spry launched a pair of home runs to become the school's all-time leader with 31 career round-trippers, eclipsing the old mark of 30 held by Bill Staub (1996-99). Brad McCullough (Susquehannock/New Freedom, PA) was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Eli Rock (Waynesboro/ Waynesboro, PA)and Walck each added a pair of hits. Jon Serrano (Brooke Point/ Stafford, VA) smacked his first home run of the year with a solo blast in the fourth.

J.R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/Hedgesville, WV) worked the first six innings to improve to 3-2. He recorded eight strikeouts without yielding any walks. Drummond struck out the side in the seventh to complete the game. Brian Rudd took the loss for Southern Virginia.

Shepherd improves to 7-10 on the year. The two teams will meet again on Saturday in a single game at noon.
