PRINCETON, W.Va. -- West Virginia State handed Shepherd College a 14-4 setback in first day action of the WVIAC Baseballl Tournament at Hunnicutt Field on Friday.
Tim Shilling belted a pair of home runs and went 3-for-4 with three run scored and three RBI to lead State's 17-hit attack. Jeffry Cadwallader and Sam Gerkin added three hit apiece.
Joe Cook (Loudoun County/Leesburg, VA), Josh Delawder (Paw Paw (Potomac State)/Paw Paw, WV) and Shane Wines (Warren County/Front Royal, VA) had two hits each to lead the Rams. Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Shepherd scored two runs in the sixth when Spry singled home Cook and later scored on a double off the bat of Delawder. The Rams added two more tallies in the ninth when Adam Caron (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA) singled and later scored on a single from Cook and Spry hit a sacrifice fly to plate Wines, who also singled.
Ram starter Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) suffered the loss, while Justin Clyde earned the win for the Yellow Jackets
Shepherd drops to 24-17, while State improves to 24-21-1. The Rams will face West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
