SHEPHERD SPLITS WITH SALEM

CLARKSBURG, WV -- Shepherd split with Salem International in WVIAC baseball doubleheader action at Frank Loria Field on Sunday. The Tigers took game one with a 5-3 win, while the Rams gained the split with a 7-6 triumph in the nightcap.

Salem International scored five runs on five hits in the first inning of the nightcap after Shepherd had scored a pair in the top of the frame. After Salem added a run in the second, Shepherd cut the lead to 6-5 with three runs in the third.

Shepherd plated two runs in the fifth to gain the win. Tavis Laws (Stephens City, VA/Sherando/Eastern Mennonite) singled home Steve Kozak (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson HS) to tie the game and Jon Serrano (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point HS) reached base on a single and later scored on a Tiger error for the game-winner.

Charlie Drummond (Strasburg, VA/Strasburg HS) went 3-for-4 with a home run to pace the Rams. Serrano also recorded a 3-for-4 effort. Laws added a pair of hits and a stolen base.

Shepherd pitcher Tony Magnanelli (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) pitched hitless ball in relief of starter Jeff Kirkpatrick (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro HS) to pick up his first collegiate win. Tiger starter Jason Ulmer took the loss.

The Tigers took game one behind a strong pitching performance from Jeff Ramer. Ramer scattered three hits to pick up the win, while Ram starter Scott Koscielniak (Severn, MD/Old Mill HS/CCBC-Catonsville) suffered the loss.

Laws went 2-for-4 and Drummond was 1-for-3 with a double to lead the Rams.

Shepherd moves to 10-11 on the season, 2-4 in conference play. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Slippery Rock for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
