SHIPPENSBURG, PA -- Shippensburg University handed Shepherd College a 9-2 loss in baseball action at Fairchild Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Red Raiders grabbed a commanding 5-0 lead in the second inning behind four hits. All the runs were unearned as Shippensburg also took advantage of two Ram errors.
Shepherd got on the board in the third when Zac Couturiaux (Linganore (Allegany College)/Union Bridge, MD) was hit by pitch and later scored when Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) walked with the bases loaded.
Shippensburg retaliated in the fourth with three more runs. Steve Berkley knocked a two-run double and Matt DeSanto added an RBI-double to extend the lead to 8-1.
Shepherd added a run in the fifth when Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA) singled and later scored on a ground out by Jason Rhea (Berkeley Springs (Pensacola JC)/Abingdon, VA).
Shippensburg added a single run in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) took the loss for the Rams. Shippensburg starter Evan Englebrook worked six innings with six strikeouts to pick up the win.
Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) and Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) led the Rams with two hits each. Berkey and Ryan Lindstadt had three hits apiece to pace the Red Raiders.
Shepherd falls to 9-3-1, while Shippensburg improves to 5-13-1. The Rams return to action on Friday to host Kutztown University in a single game at 3:00 p.m.
