NUTTER FORT, WV -- Shepherd College swept a doubleheader from Salem International University in WVIAC baseball action at Frank Loria Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Rams earned a 4-1 win in the first game and took the nightcap with an 8-5 victory.
Shepherd starter Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA) worked 5.1 innings to pick up his fourth win of the season in game one. Jimmy Jackson (Old Mill/Millersville, MD) finished the final 1.2 innings to gain his fifth save. The duo limited the Tigers to only three hits.
Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) went 3-for-4 to pace the Rams. Zac Couturiaux (Linganore(Allegany College)/Union Bridge, MD) added a 2-for-3 effort, while Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA) drove in a pair of runs and scored twice. Walck belted a two-run homer in the seventh to extend the Shepherd lead.
J.R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/Hedgesville, WV) improved to 4-1 on the year with a win in the nightcap. Fitzwater entered the game in the fifth inning in relief of starter Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA). Jackson came on to work the final 1.2 innings to post his second save of the day.
Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams. Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA), Jake Ellifritz (Keyser (Potomac State/Coastal Carolina)/Keyser, WV), Lucas Taylor (Keyser (Potomac State/Davis & Elkins)/Keyser, WV), and Miller added two hits each. Jason Rhea (Berkeley Springs (WV) (Pensacola JC)/Abingdon, VA) smacked his second homer of the year, a two-run shot in the sixth.
Shepherd improves to 17-4-1, 6-0 in WVIAC play, while Salem International falls to 9-15, 5-4. The Rams return to action next Tuesday when they host West Liberty. Doubleheader action will begin at 1:00 p.m.
