SHEPHERD OUTSLUGS POST FOR 20-13 WIN
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University smacked a school-record 24 hits en route to a 20-13 win over Post University in baseball action on Sunday at Fairfax Field. Shepherd improved to 2-1, while Post dropped to 1-2.
Senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) went 5-for-7 with five RBIs and sophomore Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) went 4-for 5 and drove in four runs to pace the Ram attack.
Senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) went 3-for-6 with three RBIs, while senior second baseman Nicky Brown (Falling Waters, WV/Hedgesville/Potomac State) and senior shortstop Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC) also added three hits apiece.
Ryan DePolo went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and Matt DiMania went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs to lead the Eagles.
The see-saw battle featured six lead changes and three ties until the Rams posted an eight-run eighth inning to seal the win. A three-run homer off the bat of junior outfielder John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State), RBI-doubles by Collin Brown (2) and Joe Cook, and RBI-singles from freshman third baseman Andrew McCormick (Stephens City, VA/ Sherando HS) and Ryan Brady highlighted the inning.
Senior Chris Anderson (Middletown, MD/Middletown HS/Hagerstown CC) (1-0) pitched hitless ball for two and two-thirds innings to pick up his first win of the year. Post reliever Garry Niles (0-1) suffered the loss.
The Rams return to action next Friday when they host Mansfield University for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
Notes: Shepherd also set a new team record for most doubles in a game with seven. The 24 hits eclipsed the old mark of 23 set during the 1979 season. Collin Brown tied a pair of Ram single game records with his five hits in a game (shared by seven others- most recently by Mike Spry against Ohio Valley in 2001) and his three doubles (tied mark set by John Wentz in 1986 against WV Wesleyan in 1986).
Box Score
