SHEPHERD SPLITS WITH POST IN SEASON OPENER
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University split the season opening doubleheader with Post University on Saturday at Fairfax Field. The Rams used a 12-hit attack to gain a 9-2 win in the opener. The Eagles earned the split with a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd plated six runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning in the opener en route to a 9-1 win in the opener.
Senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State), senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS), senior catcher David Toth (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian Academy/Potomac State), and senior second baseman Nicky Brown (Falling Waters, WV/Hedgesville/Potomac State) led the Rams with two hits apiece. Cook and Nicky Brown each added a pair of RBIs.
Ram starter Scott McCormick (Stephens City, VA/ Sherando HS/Potomac State) scattered five hits over five innings to pick up the win. Freshman Brandon Armentrout (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) worked the final two innings for the Rams. Eagle starter Omar Tavaras suffered the loss.
Eagle starter C.J. Fleming limited the Rams to four hits in five innings in the nightcap to pick up the win. Brendan Wyman worked the final two innings for Post.
Ram starter Travis Mumaw (Edinburg, VA/Central HS/ Potomac State) took the loss. Senior Chris Anderson (Middletown, MD/ Middletown HS/Hagerstown CC) pitched hitless ball for the Rams over the final three innings.
Adam Unger went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Jordon Klein added a 1-for-4 effort with a two-run double to pace the Eagles.
Sophomore third baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) led the Rams in the nightcap with a 3-for-4 effort with two RBIs. He belted a solo homer to left field in the seventh.
Shepherd (1-1) and Post (1-1) return to action on Sunday for a single game at noon.
Notes: Collin Brown tied a Ram single game record by being hit-by-pitch three times in the nightcap.The win by Post was the first collegiate coaching victory for former major leaguer Rico Brogna.
