OHIO VALLEY EDGES SHEPHERD, 5-4
PRINCETON, W.Va. -- D.J. Schreckengost smacked a two-out solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to lead Ohio Valley to a 5-4 win over Shepherd University in WVIAC Baseball Tournament at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton on Saturday night.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run blast off the bat of senior second baseman Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/ Potomac State).
The Fighting Scots rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Kenny Balderson and Schreckengost each had RBI-singles and Ohio Valley took advantage of an infield error in the three-run rally.
Shepherd retook the lead at 4-3 with two runs in the sixth. Senior shortstop Nicky Brown (Falling Waters, WV/Hedgesville HS/Potomac State) doubled and scored on a double by freshman third baseman Andrew McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS). McCormick later scored on a single off the bat of sophomore outfielder Jerry Jubb (Arnold, MD/ Broadneck HS).
Ohio Valley tied the game in the seventh when Wayne Toms led off the inning with a triple and scored on a two-out single from Kenny Balderson.
Balderson, Shreckengost, and Jesse Young each had two hits for the Fighting Scots.
Sophomore Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS), Nicky Brown, McCormick, and junior outfielder John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State) all had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Webb (3-1), who had a game-high six strikeouts, took the loss for the Rams. Zach Fairbanks worked the final four innings to pick up the win for Ohio Valley.
Shepherd falls to 34-16, while Ohio Valley improves to 34-25. The Ram await word next week on their status as a qualifier for the Northeast Region Baseball Tournament.
