SHEPHERD BASEBALL SPLITS WITH OHIO VALLEY

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University split baseball doubleheader action with Ohio Valley on Wednesday afternoon at Fairfax Field. Ohio Valley rallied for a 5-3 win in game one, while Shepherd earned the split with a 9-1 win in the nightcap.

Junior outfielder John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State) went 3-for-3 and belted a three-run homer in the third inning to pace the Rams in the nightcap. Senior second baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/ Hedgesville HS/Potomac State) and freshman third baseman Andrew McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS) each added a pair of hits.

Brad McConnachie and Matt Wharton had two hits apiece to lead the Fighting Scots.

Senior starter Scott McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS/Potomac State) scattered six hits and allowed one run over five innings. Sophomore reliever Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) allowed one hit over the final two innings to seal the win. Ohio Valley starter Brian Cuffe took the loss.

The Rams took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) led off with a solo blast. John Hawse doubled to score senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) and later on an RBI-double from Andrew McCormick.

Ohio Valley cut the lead to 3-1 in the second on a solo blast from Andrew Lore.

The Fighting Scots took a 4-3 lead in the third with three runs. Brad McConnachie's two-run single keyed the rally.

Ohio Valley added an insurance run in the fourth when McConnachie reached base on an error and later scored on a single by Wayne Toms.

Collin Brown led Shepherd in the nightcap with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.

Jesse Young and Ben Meneley had two hits each for Ohio Valley.

Senior pitcher Chris Anderson (Middletown, MD/ Middletown HS/Hagerstown CC) took the loss for Shepherd, while Darin Samson gained the win for the Fighting Scots.

Shepherd moves to 26-10, while Ohio Valley is now 23-13. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Salem International University for a 1:00 p.m. conference doubleheader.
