SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va -- Shepherd College swept a doubleheader from Ohio Valley in baseball action on Wednesday at Fairfax Field. The Rams took a 6-0 win in game one and added an impressive 22-1 victory in the nightcap.
Lucas Taylor (Keyser (Potomac State/Davis & Elkins)/Keyser, WV), Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, VA), and Jake Ellifritz (Keyser (Potomac State/Coastal Carolina)/Keyser, WV) each had two hits to lead the Rams in game one.
Shepherd starter J.R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/Hedgesville, WV) picked up his sixth win of the year. He recorded five strikeouts in five innings. Monte Spurgeon (Hedgesville/Hedgesville, WV) and Jeff Gaskins (Loudoun Valley (Potomac State)/Lovettsville, VA) each tossed an inning to close out the game.
The Rams tied a team single-game record with five home runs in the nightcap to score a season-high 22 runs.
Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) hit a pair of home runs to set a new Shepherd single season mark. Spry's 13 round-trippers eclipse the old mark of 12 set by Bill Staub in 1997.
Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA), Jason Rhea (Berkeley Springs (Pensacola JC)/Abingdon, VA), and Ellifritz also added homers.
Rhea belted a grand slam in the third and finished the game with a 4-for-5 effort with five RBI and three runs scored. Spry was 3-for-4 with four runs scored and also had five RBI. Zac Couturiaux (Linganore (Allegany College)/Union Bridge, MD) added a 3-for-3 performance, while Taylor and Ellifritz each added a pair of hits.
Ohio Valley's lone run of the day came on a solo homer off the bat of Darren Graham.
Justin Collins (Fallston/Forest Hill, MD) moved his record to 5-0 on the year with the win in the nightcap. He fanned five in five innings of work. Spurgeon worked the final two innings in his second appearance of the day.
Shepherd improves to 32-7-1, while Ohio Valley falls to 11-23.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host Shippensburg for a single nine-inning game in the regular season finale. Action is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
