NEWBERRY SWEEPS SHEPHERD
NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Newberry College swept Shepherd University in baseball action at Kirkland Field on Sunday. Newberry took the opener with a 4-3 win and won the nightcap with a 13-5 victory.
Indian starter Pete Stuppiello (1-1) earned a complete game win in game one with seven strikeouts. Ram starter Scott McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS/Potomac State) (0-1) fanned five in a losing effort for the Rams.
Nick Martin singled home Clark Mullins in the sixth inning for the game-winning run in game one.
Junior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) and junior catcher David Toth (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian Academy/Potomac State) each went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Rams. Sophomore first baseman Steve Kozak (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson HS) and junior shortstop Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC) each added a hit.
T.J. McCord belted a pair of homers in the nightcap to lead the Indians to a 13-5 win. McCord was 2-for-3 with five RBI in the game.
Newberry starter Joel Crisp (1-1) went the distance with four strikeouts to gain the win, while Ram starter Steve Kozak (0-1) took the loss.
Brady and Nicky Brown each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams. Sophomore catcher Matt Noll (Charles Town, WV/ Jefferson HS) was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Freshman first baseman Phillip Powell (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown HS) belted a solo homer in his first collegiate at-bat.
Shepherd falls to 1-3, while Newberry improves to 5-7. The Rams are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday when they host Seton Hill for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
