SHEPHERD SPLITS BASEBALL OPENER

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Shepherd University split a doubleheader with Newberry College in baseball action at Kirkland Field on Saturday. Newberry took the opener with a 5-2 win, while the Rams gained the split with a 4-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Junior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to pace the Rams in the nightcap win. Junior second baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/Potomac State), freshman third baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS), junior catcher David Toth (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian Academy/Potomac State) and sophomore catcher Matt Noll (Charles Town, WV/ Jefferson HS) each added a hit.

Senior pitcher Scott Koscielniak (Severn, MD/ Old Mill HS/CCBC-Catonsville) fanned four in six innings to pick up the win. Junior reliever Todd Coder (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge HS) picked up the save with a scoreless effort in the seventh. Indian starter Jared Locke sufffered the loss.

Newberry used a four-run first inning en route to a 5-2 win in the opener.

Indian starter Russell Haltiwanger struck out seven and allowed only one earned run in 5 2/3 innings to gain the win. Patrick Egleston worked the final 1 1/3 innings to record the save. Ram starter Tony Magnanelli (Frederick, MD/ Frederick HS) took the loss.

Sophomore first baseman Steve Kozak (Harpers Ferry, WVJefferson HS) went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Rams in game one. Junior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) and junior shortstop Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC) each added a hit.

Shepherd opens at 1-1, while Newberry moves to 3-7. The two teams return to action on Sunday at Newberry with doubleheader action starting at 1:00 p.m.
