MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- Shepherd College used a 13-hit attack en route to a 12-2 win over Mount Olive in baseball action at Scarborough Field. The victory was Shepherd's first-ever win over the Trojans in the five-year series.
The Rams took a 5-0 lead in the third inning behind a six-hit barrage. Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA), Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA), Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD), Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD), and Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) each singled, while Jason Rhea (Berkeley Springs (WV) (Pensacola JC)/Abington, VA) smacked a double.
Shepherd added a run in the fourth to take a 6-0 advantage when Spry singled home Miller.
The Rams added four more runs on four hits in the sixth take a commanding 10-0 advantage. Shepherd added single runs in the seventh and ninth to complete its biggest scoring output of the year.
The Trojans got on the board in the seventh on a two-run homer from designated hitter Robert Borden.
Spry led the Ram attack with a 3-for-5 effort with three RBIs. Walck and Rhea each added two hits, while Rhea and Powell drove in two runs each.
Shepherd starter J.R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/Hedgesville, WV) scattered four hits in seven innings to gain his first win as a Ram. He had eight strikeouts and only allowed one earned run. Jeff Gaskins (Loudoun Valley (Potomac State)/Lovettsville, VA) and Monte Spurgeon (Hedgesville/Hedgesville, WV) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to cap the win. Mount Olive starter Justin Hughes suffered the loss.
Shepherd improves to 5-2-1, while Mount Olive falls to 16-9. The Rams return home to host SUNY-Oswego on Friday at 3:00 p.m. for a single nine-inning contest.
