MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- Mount Olive snapped Shepherd's five game unbeaten steak with a 3-0, 3-2 sweep of the Rams in baseball doubleheader action at Mount Olive on Monday.
The Trojans scored single runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings to gain the 3-0 win in the opener.
Alan Fricks scattered four hits to pick up the complete game win. Shepherd starter Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA), who allowed one one earned run, took the loss.
Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA), Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD), Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD), and Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA) each had singles for the Rams in game one.
Mount Olive rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second game to edge the Rams, 3-2.
The Rams gained a 1-0 advantage in the third when Zac Couturiaux (Linganore (Allegany College)/Union Bridge, MD) was hit by pitch, moved to second on a Lucas Taylor (Keyser/Potomac State/Davis & Elkins)/Keyser, WV) sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single up the middle from Walck.
Couturiaux and Walck teamed up again in the fifth to increase the Shepherd lead to 2-0. Couturiaux led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a Walck single to right center.
Mount Olive took advantage of three Ram errors to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back doubles by Brad Church and Shawn Warner in the sixth lifted the Trojans to the 3-2 triumph.
Jonathan McClellan earned the win for Mount Olive, while Miller took the loss for the Rams.
Walck went 3-for-4 and Jason Rhea (Berkeley Springs (WV) (Pensacola JC)/Abington, VA) added a 2-for-3 performance to pace the Rams in game two.
Shepherd falls to 4-2-1, while Mount Olive improves to 16-8. The two teams are scheduled to play a nine inning contest on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
