MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- J. R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/Hedgesville, WV) tossed a two-hitter and Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) went 2-for-4 to lead Shepherd College to a 2-1 win over Mount Olive College in the nightcap to give the Rams a split in baseball action at Scarborough Field. Mount Olive took the first game with a 3-2 triumph.
The Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one on a two-run double off the bat of Carl Whittington.
Shepherd cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second when Josh Delawder (Paw Paw (Potomac State)/Paw Paw, WV) doubled, moved to third on Nick Gozzard's (Canon-McMillan (Allegany College)/Eighty Four, PA) ground out, and scored when Jon Serrano (Brooke Point/Stafford, VA) struck out swinging, but reached base on an error by the Mount Olive catcher.
The Rams tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth when pinch runner Joe Cook (Loudoun County/Leesburg, VA) scored from second on another throwing error by the catcher.
The Trojans forged the win in the eighth when Brad Church singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single from Whittington.
Shepherd reliever Jimmy Jackson (Old Mill/Millersville, MD) (0-1) suffered the loss, while Mount Olive reliever Josh Clow (3-1) earned the win. Ram starter Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) went seven innings scattering four hits and striking out three.
Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) and Delawder each had two hits for the Rams in game one.
In the second game the Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the second when Whittington led off the inning with a single, went to third on a single from Josh Carter, and later scored on a double play.
Shepherd tied the game in the fourth when Drummond led off with a triple and scored on an RBI-single from Delawder.
The Rams earned the victory with a run in the fifth. Tavis Laws (Sherando (Eastern Mennonite)/Stephens City, VA) walked and moved to second on Jason Walck's (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA) sacrifice bunt. Spry followed with a walk, and Laws and Spry each advanced a base on a double steal. Drummond plated Laws on an infield single for the game-winning hit.
Fitzwater (2-0) recorded five strikeouts and went the distance to earn the win for the Rams, while Brad Church (2-1) took the loss for the Trojans.
Shepherd moves to 3-2 on the year, while Mount Olive is now 16-10. The two teams will complete the series tomorrow afternoon with a single game starting at 2:00 p.m.
