MOUNT OLIVE HANDS SHEPHERD 9-1 SETBACK
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Mount Olive College used a nine-hit attack en route to a 9-1 win over Shepherd University in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Friday afternoon.
Josh Carter's two-run single keyed a five-run second inning for the Trojans. Stephen Nordan hit a three-run homer in the fourth and Jordan Arnold added a solo blast in the fifth.
Santos Estremera and Anthony Williams each had a pair of hits to lead Mount Olive.
Junior third baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/ Potomac State), sophomore first baseman Steve Kozak (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson HS), junior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS), freshman designated hitter Philip Powell (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown HS), junior outfielder Ryan Harju (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley HS/Hagerstown CC), and freshman second baseman Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) each had hits for the Rams. Harju's double was the only extra-base hit for Shepherd.
Shepherd's lone tally came in the seventh when Cook led off with a single, moved to second on a single by Powell, and scored on a single by Bowers.
Mount Olive starter Justin Staatz picked up the win. Staatz struck out six in seven innings. Ram starter Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) took the loss.
Shepherd falls to 12-11, while Mount Olive improves to 21-22. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
