SHEPHERD BASEBALL SPLITS WITH MILLERSVILLE
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University split baseball doubleheader action with Millersville University on Saturday afternoon at Fairfax Field. The Rams took a 4-3 decision in game one and the Marauders took the nightcap with a 5-4 win.
Senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and sophomore first baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored to pace the Rams in game one. Junior first baseman John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State) was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
B.J. Alaimo went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Marauders.
Senior pitcher Chris Anderson (Middletown, MD/Middletown HS/Hagerstown CC) scattered five hits over six innings and fanned six en route to his third win of the year. Webb shut down Millersville in the seventh to pick up his third save of the year. Paul John Holberg took the loss for the Maurauders.
Millersville scored all five runs in the second inning of the nightcap and held on for a 5-4 win. Andrew Docterman's two-run single highlighted the inning.
Brett Rhoads went 2-for-3 to lead the Marauders at the plate in the nightcap.
Hawse went 4-for-4 and senior second baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/Potomac State) went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Rams.
Millersville starter Kevin Leddy allowed seven hits and four earned runs in five innings to gain the win. Jeff Mazalewski worked the final two innings to pick up the save. Ram starter Travis Mumaw (Edinburg, VA/Central HS/Potomac State) (1-2) suffered the loss. Sophomore reliever Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) posted an impressive effort as he pitched hitless ball over the final 5.1 innings.
Shepherd moves to 7-3 on the year, while Millersville opens play at 1-1. The two teams return to action on Sunday with doubleheader action beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Notes: Collin Brown tied the Ram single-game mark for stolen bases with four in the nightcap. He had three thefts in the first inning.
