FRONT ROYAL, VA -- Mansfield University swept Shepherd in baseball doubleheader action at Bing Crosby Stadium on Sunday. The Mountaineeers edged Shepherd 8-7 in game one and took a 9-1 victory in the nightcap.
Bo Royal led the Rams in game one with a 2-for-4 effort. Shane Wines (Warren County/Front Royal, VA) added a hit and two RBI, while Josh Delawder (Paw Paw (Potomac State)/Paw Paw, WV) scored a pair runs. Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) belted a solo homer.
Shepherd nearly rallied for the win in the bottom of the seventh. Spry singled and later scored on a Nick Gozzard (Canon-McMillan(Allegany College)/ Eighty-Four, PA) ground out, and Delawder singled and later score on an infield error to cut the lead to 8-7. With runners on the corners and two outs, Mountaineer reliever Marty Rakacazewski got Brad McCullough (Susquehannock/New Freedom, PA) to ground into a force play to end the Ram rally.
Doug Evans went 3-for-4 and Brett Brown added three RBI to lead Mansfield's 10-hit attack.
Mansfield starter Dan Yoder earned the win and Rakacazewski tossed the final 1 2/3 innings to gain the save. Ram starter J.R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/Hedgesville, WV) suffered his first loss of the year.
Mansfield starter John Cronin tossed a complete game four-hitter to lead the Mountaineers in game two. He recorded eight strikeouts and allowed one unearned run. McCullough took the loss for the Rams.
Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD), Delawder, and Jason Walck (Waynesboro/ Waynesboro/ Waynesboro, VA) each had singles for the Rams in the nightcap. Royal smacked an RBI-double to plate Delawder in the second inning for Shepherd's only run.
Brett Brown and Jason Fischer each had two hits and three RBI to pace Mansfield.
Shepherd falls to 4-5, while Mansfield improves to 10-7. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 1:00 p.m. conference doubleheader.
