SHEPHERD BASEBALL SPLITS WITH MANSFIELD
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Senior pitcher Chris Anderson (Middletown, MD/Middletown HS/Hagerstown CC) tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout in the nightcap to help lift Shepherd University a 2-0 win and earn a split with Mansfield University in baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Friday afternoon. The Mountaineers rallied for a 5-3 win in game one.
Anderson fanned nine en route to his second win of the year without a defeat. Matt Allegretto, who surrendered only four hits, was the tough-luck loser for Mansfield.
Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to capture the win. Senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/ Southern Durham HS/NC State) was hit-by-pitch with one out. He advanced to second on an infield error and scored on a double off the bat of senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS). Sophomore Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) followed with a double to score Cook.
Webb went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Colby Rickabaugh smacked a two-run homer in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and give the Mountaineers a 5-3 win in game one. Shepherd had a 3-2 lead going into the seventh when Ryan Wyland reached base on a two-base error and scored on a single from Brett Shockloss to tie the game.
Rickabaugh was 2-for-2 with three RBIs to the pace Mansfield eight-hit attack. Wyland also added a pair of hits.
Redshirt-freshman Matt Bartgis (Hedgesville. WV/ Hedgesville HS) went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in game one. Cook was 1-for-3 with an RBI and senior catcher David Toth (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian Academy/Potomac State) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Mansfield starter Adam Lorson went the distance with six strikeouts to gain the win. Ram starter Scott McCormick (Stephens City, VA/ Sherando HS/Potomac State) (1-1) took the loss for the Rams. McCormick recorded five strikeouts.
Shepherd moves to 3-2 on the year while Mansfield opens its season at 1-1. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon at Fairfax Field. The twinbill was originally slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
