SHEPHERD DEFEATS MANSFIELD

KUTZTOWN, Pa. --Shepherd College handed Mansfield University an 11-5 loss in second day action to advance to the championship round of the 2002 North Atlantic Regional Tournament at North Campus Field in Kutztown.

Holding a 3-1 advantage, Shepherd added two runs in the sixth inning. Zac Couturiaux (Linganore (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA), while Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA) singled and was plated on a single from Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD).

Shepherd added five runs on five hits in the eighth to extend the Ram lead to 10-1. Jake Ellifritz (Keyser (Potomac State/Coastal Carolina)/Keyser, WV) belted a leadoff home run, while Walck, Powell, and Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) also drove in single runs.

Mansfield rallied to within 10-4 in the bottom of the eighth with three runs. Chris Hafich doubled to drive in a run and later scored with the aid of a Shepherd error to highlight the Mountaineer rally.

The two teams each added single runs in the ninth to close out the scoring.

Miller led the Shepherd 15-hit attack with a 4-for-5 effort with three runs scored and an RBI. Powell added a 3-for-4 effort, while Spry and Couturiaux added two hits apiece. Spry and Walck each drove in three runs.

Hafich went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs to lead Mansfield.

Jimmy Jackson (Old Mill/Millersville, MD) allowed only three earned runs in gaining his first career complete game victory.

Shepherd improves to 36-11-1, while Mansfield completes its season with a 41-14 record.
