KUTZTOWN, Pa. --Shepherd College blanked Kutztown University, 6-0, to advance to the championship game of the 2002 North Atlantic Regional Tournament at North Campus Field in Kutztown on Sunday.
The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) smacked a two-run double to right centerfield to score Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) and Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA).
Shepherd added single runs in the fourth and fifth to forge a 4-0 lead. Spry launched a solo homer in the fourth and added an RBI-single in the fifth to plate Lucas Taylor (Keyser (Potomac State/Davis & Elkins)/Keyser, WV).
Shepherd completed the scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh. Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) doubled to score Taylor and Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA). Powell's double was his 17th of the season -- tying the SC mark set by Adam Straskulic in 2000.
Spry went 4-for-5, while Taylor was 3-for-5 to pace the Rams. Powell added a pair of hits.
Dave Devereux had two hits to lead the Golden Bears.
Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) scattered seven hits to pick up his his first shutout of the year. Renner improves to 10-5. His 10 victories eclipse the Shepherd single season mark set by Ty Hart in 1997. Renner fanned eight while yielding only three walks.
Shepherd improves to 37-11-1, while Kutztown falls to 34-22.
