SHEPHERD FALLS TO KUTZTOWN

The Shepherd dugout observes the action against Kutztown University.

KUTZTOWN, Pa. --Host Kutztown University handed Shepherd College a 4-2 loss in first day action of the 2002 North Atlantic Regional Tournament at North Campus Field in Kutztown.

Kutztown pitcher Glenn Woolard scattered five hits and struck out eight to gain the win. Ram starter Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA) suffered the loss. Miller allowed only two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Kutztown got on the board in the third inning when Dave Rode singled and later scored on an RBI-single from Al Fitch.

The Golden Bears increased their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Dave Devereux led off the inning with a single and eventually scored via a sacrifice fly from Clay Kuklick.

Shepherd cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth. Lucas Taylor (Keyser (Potomac State/Davis & Elkins)/Keyser, WV) led off with a bunt single and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/ Strasburg, VA).

The Golden Bears responded with a run in the top of the seventh. Chris Lauwers led off with a single and scored on an RBI-single from Dennis Smeding.

The Rams cut the deficit to 3-2 in the eighth when Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA) walked, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on an RBI-single from Drummond.

Kutztown added an insurance run in the ninth when Greg Rada walked, stole second, and scored on a single from Smeding.

Shepherd falls to 34-11-1, while Kutztown improves to 33-21.
