SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Zac Couturiaux's (Linganore (Allegany College)/Union Bridge, MD) single to left field in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA) to lift Shepherd College to an 8-7 win over Kutztown University in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Sunday afternoon.
Kutztown opened the scoring in the first inning when Dennis Smeding walked and later scored on a Dave Devereux single.
Shepherd answered back with two runs in the second and a run in the third.
Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/ Strasburg, VA) walked and scored when Miller homered to right center to give the Rams a 2-1 lead in the second. Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) doubled to plate Lucas Taylor (Keyser (Potomac State/Davis & Elkins)/Keyser, WV) in the third.
The Golden Bears took a 5-4 lead in the fourth behind a two-run homer from Scott Senna and another two-run blast from Rick Buro. Kutztown added a run in the fifth when Smeding doubled and scored on a double off the bat of John Yearsley to increase the lead to 6-4.
Powell led off the bottom of the fifth with a double to right and Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) followed with a two-run blast to left center to tie the game at 6-6.
Kutztown retook the lead in the sixth when Yearsley's sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Chris Lauwers.
The Rams tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom half of the inning when Drummond hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Powell, who reached base on an error.
Miller led off the 10th inning with a single to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Ellifritz (Keyser (Potomac State/Coastal Carolina)/Keyser, WV) to set the stage for Couturiaux's heroics.
Ram reliever Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) picked up the win, while Kutztown's Rob McCuen was credited with the loss. Shepherd relief specialist Jimmy Jackson (Old Mill/Millersville, MD) set a new Shepherd mark for career relief appearances. Jackson now has 33 career relief appearances to break the old mark of 32 held by Brian Sands (1996-97).
Taylor led Shepherd with a 3-for-4 outing. Powell, Spry, Miller, and Couturiaux each added two hits.
Joe Bosack, Devereux, and Buro had two hits each to pace the Golden Bears.
Shepherd improves to 11-4-1, while Kutztown falls to 10-9. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they open conference play at home against Davis & Elkins. Doubleheader action is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
