SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Shepherd College split a doubleheader with Kutztown University in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams took a 7-1 victory in the first game, while the Golden Bears earned the split with an 11-2 triumph in the nightcap.
The Rams used the long ball to capture the win in game one. Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/ Strasburg, VA) belted a three-run homer in the second inning and Lucas Taylor (Keyser (Potomac State/Davis & Elkins)/Keyser, WV) added a two-run blast in the third to give the Rams a 5-0 advantage.
Shepherd added two more runs in the fourth. Lance Williams (W. T. Woodson/Oak Hill, VA) doubled and later scored on an error, while Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) reached base on a error and later scored with the aid of another Kutztown miscue.
Kutztown's lone run came in the fifth when Clay Kuklick led off with a double and later scored on a Shepherd throwing error.
Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA) scattered five hits over six innings to pick up his second win of the year. Kutztown starter Michael Rehman took the loss.
Kutztown used a 13-hit attack to gain the victory in game two.
Dennis Smeding led the Golden Bears at the plate in the nightcap. Smeding went 3-for-5 with seven RBIs and two runs scored. His hits included a three-run homer, a three-run double and an RBI-single.
Drummond led Shepherd with a 2-for-3 effort.
Kutztown's Paul Garber picked up the win in relief of starter Glenn Woolard. Woolard had five strikeouts and allowed only two hits in three and two-thirds innings. Ram starter J. R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/Hedgesville, WV) suffered the loss.
Shepherd moves to 10-4-1, while Kutztown goes to 10-8. The two teams are scheduled to play a nine inning contest on Sunday at noon at Fairfax Field.
