![]() RISER GAINS 300TH CAREER VICTORY SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV -- Shepherd University pounded out 13 hits en route to a 9-5 win over Fairmont State in WVIAC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Sunday afternoon. The triumph give Shepherd head coach Wayne Riser his 300th career victory. Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Shepherd rapped four hits and took advantage of two Falcon errors to take a 3-1 lead. Steve Kozak (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson HS) smacked a two-run single to key the Ram rally. Fairmont added a run in the fourth when Mike Burke reached base on an error and later scored on a single by Justin Kevan to make a 3-2 game. Charlie Drummond (Strasburg, VA/Strasburg HS) belted a solo homer in the fifth to give the Rams a 4-2 lead. The Rams added two more runs in the sixth behind a two-run double off the bat of Tavis Laws (Stephens City, VA/Sherando/Eastern Mennonite) to extend the lead to 6-2. A two-run homer by Sam Coakley and a solo shot by George Laase in the seventh cut the Shepherd lead to 6-5. The Rams added three more insurance runs in the eighth to cap the milestone victory for their head coach. Jon Serrano (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point HS) belted a two-run double and Josh Delawder (Paw Paw, WV/Paw Paw HS/Potomac State) added a sacrifice fly to account for the game's final tallies. Jason Walck (Waynesboro, PA/ Waynesboro HS) led the Rams at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance. Norris Roy (Gambrills, MD/Arundel HS/Hagerstown CC) added a pair of hits. Coakley and Nick Pleyo each had a pair of hits for the Falcons. Ram starter Scott Koscielniak (Severn, MD/Old Mill HS/CCBC-Catonsville) improved to 5-2 with the win. He recorded six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Todd Coder (Woodbridge, VA/ Woodbridge, VA) closed out the seventh with a hitless effort, and Drummond pitched hitless ball over the final two innings to gain his sixth save of the year. Josh Kusich took the loss for Fairmont. Shepherd improves to 16-15 overall, 6-6 in WVIAC play, while Fairmont falls to 13-20, 7-4. The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to nationally-ranked Shippensburg for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
