KOZAK, BOWERS COMBINE FOR ONE-HITTER; RAMS REACH 20-WIN MARK

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Junior Steve Kozak (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson HS) and sophomore Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) combined on a one-hitter in the nightcap as the Rams earned a 1-0 win against Fairmont State to gain a split in WVIAC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Sunday. Sophomore first baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) roped a single to center field in the sixth inning to plate senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State), who reached base on a two-out double, with the game-winner. Fairmont State won game one with a 4-2 triumph. Shepherd hit the 20-win mark as they move to 20-8 overall, 8-2 in WVIAC action. Fairmont is now 12-18, 7-5.

Kozak (2-0) fanned seven in five innings and allowed only an infield single by Matt Arcure. Bowers tossed hitless ball over the final two frames and struck out Falcons to gain the save. Andrew Knight, who fanned six and walked three in six innings, took the loss.

Fairmont took a 1-0 lead in the opener in the second when Nick Simmons singled and later scored on an RBI-double from Mike Miskanin.

The Falcons increased their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Miskanin singled home Zack Solly, who had reached base on a walk.

Fairmont added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Tyler Nunn doubled and later scored on an infield error and Andy Taylor reached base on an error and later scored on another.

Shepherd scored in the fifth when Bowers walked with the bases loaded to score Webb, who had reached on a walk.

Collin Brown singled home freshman third baseman Andrew McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS) for the game's final tally in the seventh.

Nunn and Miskanin each had a pair of hits to lead the Falcons.

Brown and McCormick each had two hits for the Rams. Shepherd stranded 15 runners in the game.

Todd Dillon gained the win for Fairmont State, while senior pitcher Chris Anderson (Middletown, MD/Middletown HS/Hagerstown CC), who fanned five and allowed only one earned run, took the loss to fall to 6-1.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Bluefield State for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
