SHEPHERD BASEBALL SPLITS WITH FAIRMONT STATE
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Freshman third baseman Andrew McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS) smacked a two-run single with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Shepherd University to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Fairmont State University in WVIAC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday in game one. The Falcons gained a split with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 in the first in game one when senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) walked, stole second base, and scored on an RBI-single from junior outfielder John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State).
The Rams increased their lead to 2-0 in the second on a solo blast by senior shortstop Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC).
Shepherd upped its lead to 3-0 in the third when Collin Brown singled, stole second and moved to third on a bunt single by senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) before scoring on a sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS).
Fairmont cut the Ram lead to 3-2 in the fifth on a two-run triple by Tyler Nunn.
The Falcons scored a pair of runs in the seventh on a two-run, two-out single by Andy Taylor to set the stage for McCormick's heroics.
Brown led the Rams with a 2-for-3 effort with three runs scored.
Patrick Griffith went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to pace the Falcons.
Webb (1-0) picked the win for the Rams, while reliever Don Rohrbaugh took the loss.
Webb belted a opposite field solo homer in the first to give the Rams a 1-0 lead in the nightcap.
The Falcon tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI-single from Chris Brown.
Tyler Nunn doubled and later scored on a fielder's choice in the sixth to give Fairmont the win.
Collin Brown went 2-for-4 in the nightcap as the game's only multiple hit performer.
Freshman starter Brandon Armentrout (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) suffered the loss, while Juwaan Holmes got the win. Josh Kusich tossed the final two innings to gain the save for the Falcons.
Shepherd moves to 19-7, 7-1 in WVIAC action, while Fairmont State is now 11-17, 6-4. The two teams return to action on Sunday at Fairfax Field with doubleheader action starting at 1:00 p.m.
