SHEPHERD SWEEPS UC

J.R. Fitzwater gained his third win of the year in game one gainst UC. Fitzwater had six strikeouts in five innings.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Shepherd College swept University of Charleston in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Friday. The Rams earned a 9-5 win in the first game and rallied for a 12-8 triumph in the nightcap.

Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA), Jake Ellifritz (Keyser (Potomac State/Coastal Carolina) Keyser, WV), Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD), Jason Rhea (Berkeley Springs (Pensacola JC)/Abingdon, VA), and Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) led the Ram attack in game one with two hits each. Drummond drove in four runs, while Ellifritz added two RBIs.

Shepherd starter J.R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/Hedgesville, WV) fanned six batters in five innings en route to his third win of the year. Jimmy Jackson (Old Mill/Millersville, MD) picked up his fourth save of the year in relief. Golden Eagle starter Jared Destro took the loss.

The Rams rallied for the win in the nightcap.

Ellifritz belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to tie the game at 8-8. Shepherd added four more runs in the sixth. Shepherd knocked two hits and took advantage of four walks and two Golden Eagle errors in the inning to capture the win.

Rhea and Drummond each had two hits to lead the Ram attack in the nightcap. Rhea and Ellifritz each drove in three runs.

Jackson worked the final two and 1/3 innings to gain his second win of the year. Charleston reliever Mike Picklesimer suffered the loss.

Jason Miles had five hits on the day to lead Charleston.

Shepherd improves to 15-4-1, 4-0 in WVIAC play, while Charleston falls to 9-14, 2-4. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to face Salem International for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.

Jake Ellifritz had three hits and drove five runs on the day to help Shepherd to a sweep over UC. Ellifritz blasted his first homer of the year in the nightcap.

Jason Rhea had four hits and drove in four runs in Shepherd's sweep over the Golden Eagles.
